JKCP Goes Green In the Summer
What better place to educate kids about going green than summer camp? Here are some of the ways we are supporting conservation and sustainability in our summer programs.
Hop, Skip and a Jump to Fun – We’re taking advantage of local events and activities to decrease our time on the road.
Did you know? Cutting your driving by 20 miles per week will reduce CO2 emissions by 1,000 pounds each year, a big savings for the environment.
Lights Out! – Students and staff are encouraged to turn off all lights when they are not in use.
Did you know? Only 10–15% of the electricity used by incandescent light bulbs is actually turned into light; the rest is lost as heat.
Shop and Save – JKCP provides eco-friendly shopping bags for students to use during trips to local markets.
Did you know? Plastic bags take from 400 to 1,000 years to photodegrade, breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits that contaminate soil and water.
Revitalize and Deplasticize – Students and staff will enjoy H20 in trendy, refillable JKCP water bottles.
Did you know? It takes 18 million barrels of oil and up to 130 billion gallons of water to manufacture plastic bottles. And that's not counting the 41 billion gallons of water it takes to fill them!
Unplug It and Go! – We’re encouraging students and staff to keep electronics unplugged when they are not in use.
Did you know? Battery chargers use 40% of their regular running energy when left plugged into the wall or on standby.
Clean Up and Cut Down – We’re challenging students and staff to conserve water when showering.
Did you know? Every minute you spend in the shower typically uses 5–10 gallons of water.
Support and Be Healthy – JKCP supports local markets by serving local, organic produce at meals.
Did you know? Local markets reduce the amount of energy required to grow and transport the food to you by 20%.
Cold For Colors (And Whites Too!) – Students and staff are encouraged to use cold water when doing laundry.
Did you know? 90% of the energy used for washing clothes comes from heating the water.
Green Tip of the Day – We’ll provide a simple and fun “green challenge” each morning to inspire mindfulness and action.
Did you know? Of the 130 million cell phones replaced in the United States every year, only 1% are recycled.
